The Power of Politeness: A Black Belt Leader’s Guide to Respect and Thoughtfulness

At AKF Martial Arts, we believe that the journey to becoming a Black Belt is about more than mastering techniques—it’s about developing the character of a leader. One of the foundational qualities of a Black Belt Leader is Politeness.

What is Politeness?

Politeness, or “po-lite-ness,” is about showing respect, thoughtfulness, and consideration to others. It’s the simple yet powerful act of using manners to create positive interactions. A true leader understands the importance of politeness in every aspect of life, whether at home, at school, or in the community.

Black Belt Manners in Action

Black Belt Leaders practice their manners at the highest level by consistently using these key phrases:

  • “PLEASE” when asking for something.
  • “THANK YOU” when receiving help.
  • “YOU’RE WELCOME” when someone thanks you.
  • “HELLO” to greet others warmly.
  • “GOODBYE” when leaving to acknowledge others.
  • “EXCUSE ME” to interject or get someone’s attention respectfully.

Politeness might seem small, but it makes a big impact, fostering kindness, building strong relationships, and creating a positive environment wherever you go.

A Leadership Challenge for the Week

Week #1 Leadership Project:
Black Belt Leaders are challenged to find ways to use Politeness every day and in every way! This is your chance to make politeness a habit in three key areas of your life.

Politeness at Home

Think about how you can show respect and thoughtfulness to your family members.

  • Saying “Good morning” and “Good night.”
  • Offering to help with chores without being asked.
  • Listening attentively when someone is speaking.

Politeness at School

Politeness doesn’t stop at home—it extends to your classmates, teachers, and school staff.

  • Holding the door for others.
  • Saying “Thank you” to your teachers after a lesson.
  • Helping a friend carry their books or supplies.

Politeness at the Academy

As part of the AKF Martial Arts community, we encourage everyone to bring their Black Belt manners to every class.

  • Greeting your instructors and peers with a bow or a friendly “Hello.”
  • Waiting your turn patiently during drills.
  • Saying “Thank you” after receiving feedback or corrections.

The Big Question

When was the last time you used YOUR manners? Reflect on your interactions this week and consider how you can incorporate more politeness into your daily life.

Politeness is more than just words; it’s a mindset that reflects the respect and kindness of a true Black Belt Leader. Let’s commit to making the world a better place, one polite act at a time.
