When most people hear “self-defense,” they imagine fists, footwork, and the ability to take down an attacker.
But the truth?
Real self-defense starts long before that.
It starts in the choices we make when no one is watching.
And this week — with temperatures in Eau Claire expected to drop to -20°F (with wind chills to match) — your self-defense mindset could literally save your life or someone else’s.
Don’t Be the Tough Guy. Be the Smart One.
We’ve seen it all winter — teens in hoodies, adults in sneakers with no socks, kids leaving the house in t-shirts like it’s April.
Let’s be clear:
This isn’t about weakness.
It’s about being prepared — and understanding that true martial artists don’t just defend themselves on the mat — they defend themselves with every decision they make.
So here’s the challenge for all our students, families, and community this week:
If you’re not wearing it…
✅ Have it in your vehicle.
✅ Pack your backup gear.
✅ Think two steps ahead.
Because once you’re stranded, sliding off a road, or helping someone else — it’s too late to “wish” you had gloves, boots, or an extra blanket in the trunk.
Cold Weather Self-Defense Checklist:
✔ Keep hats, gloves, and extra socks in your car
✔ Carry water — dehydration happens in the cold too
✔ Keep your phone charged — and a backup battery pack in the glovebox
✔ If your car is old or you drive rural roads, add a blanket and flashlight
✔ Tell someone when you’re traveling (especially for late pickups or solo drives)
Parents: Talk to Your Kids This Week
We train them to stand tall.
To face fear.
To speak with confidence.
Now’s the time to also train situational awareness — to think ahead and respect the environment around them. That’s self-defense too.
And for younger students, make it a family mission:
“What are 3 things we should always have in our car when it’s this cold?”
Self-defense isn’t just physical. It’s proactive.
It’s what you do before the problem that often determines how you come out of it.
Train for more than just the fight.
Train for life.
Stay smart. Stay warm. Stay prepared.
See you on the mat — gloves and all.
