Perseverance: Eight Lessons, One Mindset, a Lifetime of Growth

Determination Despite Difficulty.

For the past eight weeks, our students at AKF Martial Arts Academy have been working on something much bigger than kicks, forms, or earning their next belt.

They’ve been learning how to handle difficult things.

How to keep going.

How to respond when things don’t work the first time.

How to stay focused when motivation disappears.

And how to choose their actions when life doesn’t go according to plan.

We’ve been studying Perseverance, which our Kyuki-Do Life Skills curriculum defines simply and powerfully as:

Determination Despite Difficulty.

But perseverance isn’t one single skill.

Throughout this cycle, we’ve broken it into eight different leadership lessons our students can use at the Academy, at home, and throughout everyday life.

Now, as we wrap up the cycle, let’s look at what those eight lessons really mean.

1. Tenacity: “I CAN DO HARD THINGS!”

We started with Tenacity.

Tenacity is what gets us to face the challenge in the first place.

Children will encounter things that intimidate them, frustrate them, or make them wonder whether they’re capable.

Our goal isn’t to convince them that everything will be easy.

It’s to help them develop the belief:

“I can do hard things.”

That’s an important distinction.

Confidence isn’t believing everything will go perfectly.

Confidence is knowing that when things don’t go perfectly, you can handle it.

Every difficult task a child faces becomes an opportunity to build evidence that they’re stronger and more capable than they realized.

2. Determination: “I FINISH WHAT I START!”

Starting is exciting.

Finishing requires character.

That’s why our second lesson was Determination.

A new project, activity, or goal often begins with enthusiasm. But eventually the excitement fades and the work remains.

That’s the moment that matters.

Children need opportunities to experience the satisfaction that comes from following something through to completion.

A chore.

A book.

A project.

A martial arts goal.

Every time they finish what they started, they reinforce an important belief:

“I’m someone who follows through.”

3. Endurance: “NOT YET!”

One of the most powerful words we introduced this summer was only three letters long:

Yet.

“I can’t do it.”

becomes…

“I can’t do it yet.”

Our Endurance lesson wasn’t simply about physical stamina. Our curriculum emphasizes the mental strength required to reach our full potential and specifically teaches students the power of the word “YET.”

Children need to understand that struggling with something today doesn’t determine what they’ll be capable of tomorrow.

Skills grow.

Knowledge grows.

Confidence grows.

And sometimes the only thing separating “I can’t” from “I can” is more practice.

4. Patience: “CALM WINS!”

Patience isn’t simply waiting.

It’s how we act while we’re waiting.

That’s an important lesson in a world where so many things happen instantly.

Some things can’t be rushed.

Learning takes time.

Relationships take time.

Goals take time.

Black Belts take time.

Patience teaches children to remain calm and continue making good choices even when they’re not getting the result they want as quickly as they’d like.

We don’t have to let frustration control the moment.

We can pause.

We can breathe.

We can choose what happens next.

Calm wins.

5. Diligence: “LITTLE BY LITTLE!”

Big accomplishments attract attention.

Small habits create them.

That’s the lesson behind Diligence.

Our students learned that success isn’t normally built through one enormous effort.

It’s built through small actions repeated consistently.

Practice the form.

Read the pages.

Complete the chore.

Help the family.

Show up for class.

Do your best again tomorrow.

None of those actions may seem extraordinary by themselves.

Put enough of them together and something extraordinary begins to happen.

Little by little.

6. Commitment: “I KEEP MY PROMISES!”

Commitment teaches children that their word matters.

It’s easy to make promises when we’re excited.

The challenge comes later.

Will we still follow through when we’re tired?

When something more entertaining appears?

When progress takes longer than expected?

Our Perseverance curriculum teaches the formula:

Focused Intensity + Time = Success.

When children keep commitments, they don’t only build trust with other people.

They build trust with themselves.

They begin believing:

“When I say I’m going to do something, I can count on myself.”

That’s a powerful foundation for confidence.

7. Being Resolute: “I CHOOSE MY ATTITUDE!”

We can’t control everything that happens to us.

We can control what we do next.

Being Resolute taught our students the difference between reacting and responding.

Something frustrating happens.

Someone disappoints us.

We make a mistake.

A plan changes.

Our emotions are real—but our emotions don’t have to make our decisions for us.

We can ask:

“What can I control right now?”

Maybe it’s our effort.

Maybe it’s our words.

Maybe it’s our next action.

Maybe it’s simply our attitude.

Leadership begins when we stop giving circumstances control over our choices.

8. Dedication: “ALL IN!”

Our eighth pillar brought everything together.

Dedication means our actions are consistent with what we say matters to us.

It’s easy to say:

“My goal matters.”

“My family matters.”

“Becoming a Black Belt matters.”

The bigger question is:

Do our actions show it?

Dedication isn’t perfection.

It’s continuing to invest time, attention, and effort into the things we’ve decided are important.

When something truly matters, we don’t just talk about it.

We go ALL IN.

Eight Different Lessons. One Powerful Mindset.

Look at what happens when we put all eight together.

When something feels difficult:

I CAN DO HARD THINGS!

When we’re tempted to leave something unfinished:

I FINISH WHAT I START!

When we haven’t mastered something:

NOT YET!

When frustration starts taking control:

CALM WINS!

When progress feels slow:

LITTLE BY LITTLE!

When motivation fades:

I KEEP MY PROMISES!

When circumstances don’t go our way:

I CHOOSE MY ATTITUDE!

And when something truly matters:

ALL IN!

That’s more than eight catchphrases.

It’s a toolkit.

Why These Lessons Matter Beyond Martial Arts

We don’t know exactly what challenges our children will face as they grow.

But we know challenges are coming.

A difficult class.

A friendship problem.

A disappointing result.

A goal that takes longer than expected.

A job interview.

A career setback.

A difficult decision.

We can’t remove every obstacle from their path.

And we shouldn’t want to.

Instead, we can help them develop the mindset and character to face those obstacles.

That’s one of the reasons life skills are such an important part of what we teach at AKF Martial Arts Academy.

The kick matters.

The form matters.

The belt matters.

But ultimately, we’re interested in something bigger:

Who is the student becoming because of the journey?

Our Final Perseverance Challenge

To wrap up the cycle, we’re giving our students one final challenge.

Instead of learning another pillar, they’re putting all eight together.

Students will demonstrate all eight Perseverance gestures and confidently say each phrase in order.

The goal isn’t simply to see whether they memorized eight motions.

It’s to reinforce eight tools they can call on when life gets difficult.

Families can participate too.

Try going through all eight together.

Then ask one final question:

“Which of these eight lessons do you think you’ll need the most this year?”

Listen carefully to the answer.

It may tell you quite a bit about what your child is thinking about, struggling with, or working toward.

The Challenge Ends. Perseverance Doesn’t.

Eight weeks eventually come to an end.

The lessons shouldn’t.

Our goal was never simply to complete another curriculum cycle.

It was to help students begin building habits they’ll carry into their next belt, their next challenge, and eventually adulthood.

Tenacity.

Determination.

Endurance.

Patience.

Diligence.

Commitment.

Being Resolute.

Dedication.

Eight pillars.

One mindset.

Perseverance: Determination Despite Difficulty.

That’s something worth practicing long after the challenge is over.

PIL SUNG!
