At AKF Martial Arts Academy of Eau Claire, we train more than forms, takedowns, and board breaks. We train the kind of leaders people trust — the ones who do what’s right not because they’re told to, but because it’s who they are.
This week, our Leadership Pillar is Fairness — and in today’s world, that’s more than just a buzzword. It’s a core habit of character-driven people.
Because real leaders don’t play favorites. They don’t cut corners. And they don’t just fight for themselves — they raise others up with them.
What Does Fairness Look Like in a Martial Artist?
In every environment — school, home, or the mat — fairness shows up through daily choices. It’s not always easy. But it’s always visible.
Here are the 6 Leadership Habits of Fairness we challenge our students to practice:
- Follow the Rules – Respect for structure is the starting line for fairness.
- Take Turns – Let others lead, go first, or be heard. It’s not about always being first — it’s about knowing when to step back.
- Share Knowledge – If you understand something, help someone else succeed with it too.
- Praise Fairness – Leadership means recognizing when others do the right thing — and saying so.
- Play Fair – No shortcuts, no cheating. Win with effort, not advantage.
- Treat Everyone Equally – No cliques, no judgment. Everyone deserves respect.
Why This Matters (Especially Outside the Dojang)
Parents: if you’re wondering what martial arts has to do with fairness, this is it. The students we train will one day sit in classrooms, lead teams, run businesses, and raise families. And every one of those roles requires a steady moral compass.
We’re not just teaching them how to move — we’re teaching them how to live.
Weekly Leadership Mission
Each week, we give our students a challenge to carry this pillar into the real world:
- Demonstrate fairness (at home, school, or in training)
- Practice outside of class — drills, forms, or even helping a peer
- Capture your mission — submit a photo or video with a short caption
- Post it in the AKF EC Community Group and tag AKF Eau Claire or Master Gustavson
Leadership starts when no one’s watching — and shows up when everyone is.
Journaling Prompt
We challenge all students to reflect on this, and we encourage parents to ask these at the dinner table:
How can I be fair…
At Home: ___________________________________
At School: __________________________________
At the Academy: _____________________________
When you can answer that honestly — and act on it — you’re not just training for a belt. You’re training for life.
If you’re new to AKF and wondering if martial arts is right for your child — ask yourself this:
Do I want my child to be stronger? Or do I want them to be stronger and fair, focused, respectful, and self-led?
That’s the difference between a martial arts class… and leadership training for life.
