I was nine years old — restless, full of energy, and probably watching too much Ninja Turtles — when my dad and I stepped into our first martial arts class together in a small Wisconsin town.
He stopped at blue belt.

Martial arts wasn’t just an activity for me. It became me. I wasn’t the kid with a ball in my hand or trophies on the shelf. But I had something better — structure, confidence, and a fire to keep showing up.
By 16, I earned my black belt.
Years later, after moving to Eau Claire, I felt called to teach again. It started small — in a basement, then the back room of a local coffee shop. In 2008, AKF Martial Arts Eau Claire opened its doors. For a long time, I balanced full-time work, volunteering for the fire department, and building the academy one class at a time.
But when our daughter was born in 2015, my wife Katie and I made a bold decision:
Go all-in.
No backup plan. Just belief — in the mission, in the community, and in every student who walked through our doors.
The Shift That Changed Everything
At first, I focused on what I knew — solid technique, discipline, tradition. But over time, I saw what kids really needed:
- Confidence when no one’s watching
- Respect that holds up under pressure
- The power to lead — not just follow
That’s when AKF evolved.
Today, we’re not just building martial artists.
We’re raising confident, respectful leaders — kids who can walk into any room, look someone in the eye, and stand tall in who they are.
